Blues Lick of the Week

April 30, 2006

This week’s lick is a bit of flash in the Key of G.  It’s made up of notes of the G minor pentatonic blues scale.

There are three string bends in a short span of time.  The middle bend is a double (bend-up and reverse-bend).  The third bend is approached by a hammer-on (from the Bb -3rd string, 3rd fret – to the C – same string, 5th fret).  You don’t pick the C, but just bend up right after the hammer-on.  If this is a bit confusing, just look at the music – it should be clear.

The only other tricky part is the chromatic run down the 5th string from the 5th fret (D) to the 1st (Bb).  Notice that after the pull-off from the Db (4th fret) you slide down to the Bb without picking the note.

This lick can be used on a G7 (I chord) wherever it appears in the tune. Remember, you can move this and any other lick up or down to the various keys and use them there.
