Silent Night

Here’s a simple version of “Silent Night." I give this to my beginning students, as well as to my more advanced ones. The trick here is to form the chords given in the score, and pick out the melody in the tab while holding the chord. Occasionally you will have to let go of the chord to get the melody notes, but keep it to a minimum.

As an example, the first two bars of the intro are simply the notes of a C major chord in 1st position. Form the G major chord in bar three and use your 3rd or 4th finger to get the F note on the 4th string, 3rd fret, while still holding the chord. Return to a C chord in bar four and pick the notes as given in the tab. Continue in the same manner.
